I’m always surprised and/or amused when I look at the list of obscure “holidays” for a given month to see what I find. Who knew that there is such a thing as National Lighthouse Day? Congress signed it into law in 1989, and August 7th is when it’s observed.
Having lived for so many years in coastal New England, I am a big fan of lighthouses. I spent plenty of time photographing one in particular: Nubble Light in York, Maine. (Its official name is Cape Neddick Light.)
This lovely lighthouse – dedicated in 1879 – is still being used today. It was added to the National Historic Register in 1985.
