A New Year’s Prayer

December 31st, 2010 No comments

As we prepare to turn the page on the chapter known as “2010″ and move into the new year, I thought the following two items were worth sharing. The first, from Bible Illustrator, is a message from the new year. It’s followed by a prayer (for which I wish I could give credit, but it was unattributed).

I Am the New Year

I am the new year. I am an unspoiled page in your book of time.

I am your next chance at the art of living. I am your opportunity to practice what you have learned about life during the last twelve months.

All that you sought and didn’t find is hidden in me, waiting for you to search it but with more determination.

All the good that you tried for and didn’t achieve is mine to grant when you have fewer conflicting desires.

All that you dreamed but didn’t dare to do, all that you hoped but did not will, all the faith that you claimed but did not have—these slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened by the touch of a strong purpose.

I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance to Him who said, “Behold, I make all things new.”

A New Year’s Prayer

May God make your year a happy one!
Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain,
But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;
Not by making your path easy,
But by making you sturdy to travel any path;
Not by taking hardships from you,
But by taking fear from your heart;
Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,
But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows;
Not by making your life always pleasant,
But by showing you when people and their causes need you most,
and by making you anxious to be there to help.

God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.

The Gate of the Year

December 30th, 2010 No comments

Each year at this time we run an excerpt from The Gate of the Year, a wonderful poem written by Minnie Louise Haskins more than 100 years ago. It’s a beautiful statement about stepping forth into the new year with faith in God’s guidance and love.

Warmest wishes to you and yours for a happy, healthy, and blessed 2011.

The Power of Perspective

December 27th, 2010 No comments

I found this little anecdote recently; it’s an interesting illustration about how different things can sometimes look – if we take a step back and shift our point of view.

A mother saw a thunderstorm forming in mid-afternoon, and worried about her seven-year-old daughter who would be walking the three blocks from school to home in a storm. Deciding to meet her, the mother caught sight of her little girl walking nonchalantly along, stopping to smile whenever lightning flashed in the distance. When the child saw her mother, she ran excitedly to her, exclaiming happily, “All the way home, God’s been taking my picture!”

Fear is often caused by our perspective.
